News Gathering
& Web
News is all about reporting out what is happening in the world today, not yesterday, not last year. To be effective at news gathering, I try to stress the importance of timely reporting. After all, the details of the girls’ powder puff game last night are not as relevant if posted two weeks later.
Timing is something we try to enforce in our staff. As such, when we look at stories pitched during idea sessions we consider the timing of the story. Stories that are more time sensitive are often put on the website to keep the website updated and fresh. In contrast, most stories in print are not time sensitive unless the timing fits with when the print publication will be distributed.
The screenshots on the right provide examples of what ideas look like after are staff completes two idea sessions. From there, us editors decide what will be going in print or online.
